Vazhachundu Payar Thoran – Kerala Style Banana Flower Thoran with payar
1) Vazhachundu (Banana Flower) – 1
2) Red Pearl Onion – 10 , sliced
3) Green chilly – 6 small hot ones – chopped
4) Unakka Payar ( Dry Red Chori) – 1/4 cup
4) Grated coconut – 1 cup
5) Curry leaves – 2 sprigs
6) Mustard Seeds – 1/4 tsp
7) Turmeric Powder – 1 tsp
8) Coconut Oil – 3 tbsp
Soak payar overnight in water.
Next day cook payar with enough water and salt and set aside.
Remove outer layers of vazhachundu ( Banana Flower)
Make long slits on the vazhachundu and chop them into very fine pieces.
Add 2 tsp oil to this and mix well with hands and keep it aside for 1 hour.
Again mix well with hands and you should be able to separate the very thin strings from the finely chopped pieces.
Discard the thin strings.
Mix sliced onion,chopped green chilly, grated coconut, 1 spring curry leaves and the chopped banana flower.
Heat some oil in a pan and splutter mustard seeds and add one sprig curry leaf.
Add turmeric powder to this.
When turmeric starts to turn color add banana flower mix to this and cook.
Serve with Rice.
